Leadership Skills

Scouts Queensland runs numerous training courses across the year, to cover all various aspects of the scouting movement. Below you will find a list of courses offered by Scouts Queensland.

Not all courses are available in all locations, or run multiple times throughout the year. Consult the Scouts Queensland Training Calendar for more information, which can be downloaded here.

What is on offer

For the Rover Scout Section, the Scouts Australia Institute of Training offers the Rover Woodbadge, similar to the Woodbadge Training Program for Adult Leaders, as the Rover equivalent for Leadership Training.

Rovers are NOT required to complete their Woodbadge to be a Rover, however certain roles, responsibilities and appointments do require it. This is because those roles or responsibilities, whilst in the Rover Section, are still Adult Responsibilities.

1. Introduction to Rovers

The first step in the Rover Training scheme is Intro to Rovers. It’s designed to be a part of standard Squire Training, and includes a lot of information about how the Rover section operates and what you can expect from Rovering.

Intro to Rovers is an important part of the Squire Training badge, and while you can complete Intro to Rovers through the national eLearning system; attending a practical supplement offers you the opportunity to discuss things with our experienced Rovers and RAs, as well as the other Rovers in attendance. The practical supplements are designed as an engaging get-to-know-you experience for all Leaders and Rovers of a particular Region.

2. Basic Practical Course (Rovers)

The Basic Rover Course explains all about how the Rover Section operates, and shows you the pathway to being the best Rover you can.

During the course, you will learn various skills that can be used to ensure your Crew, Region, or Event Committee, is running the best it can. Alongside the other Rovers on your Course, you will learn about Rovering through various practical and discussion workshops, in an engaging workspace rather than sitting through a lecture. Some activities will involve you moving outside to do something practical like plan an activity.

You can find out more about the Basic Practical Course by clicking here.

3. Basic Outdoor Skills

Basic Outdoor Skills is all about ensuring that Rovers and RAs have the skills and knowledge required to safely run outdoor activities as part of your Crew program.

4. Basic Training Complete - Certificate of Adult Leadership

At the completion of both the Basic Practical Course (Rovers), and Basic Outdoor Skills Course, you will be awarded a Certificate of Adult Leadership. Rover Advisors will also be awarded a Certificate of Adult Appointment, to signify that you have completed the minimum level of training required to hold that appointment.

The Certificate of Adult Leadership (CoAL), represents in Rovers that you hold the minimum standard of Training to lead Rovers on an Overnight Activity (Crew Camp or otherwise), as well as hold Rover Appointments such as Crew Leader, Region Rep, and QBRE Officers.
